Smarter Ordering, Fewer Errors: How ArcelorMittal Is Embracing Digitalization with SCSN

ArcelorMittal is a global leader in steel, operating across the entire value chain — from mining to the delivery of finished products. In Europe ArcelorMittal Distribution Solutions focuses on distribution, with Ralf Erps and Rik Mertens overseeing operations in the Benelux region. From four warehouses and in-house production facilities — including one in Luxembourg — they serve customers throughout the region. As a key link between production and the manufacturing industry, digitalization plays an increasingly vital role in accelerating and improving these processes. Digital Lead Rik Mertens and Digital Business Analyst Ralf Erps explain how initiatives like SCSN are helping elevate customer collaboration to the next level.

SCSN as a Flexible Standard Solution
For ArcelorMittal, digitalization is primarily about smarter process design and reducing the burden on employees. “At the group level, we decided to implement a single ERP system across Europe, which provides a solid foundation for further digitalization,” says Rik. “We’ve optimized our processes and set up a webshop. By processing orders digitally through the webshop and via SCSN, we eliminate a large part of the administrative workload — time we’d rather spend on our customers.”

According to Ralf, SCSN’s flexibility is a major advantage: “Not every customer works the same way, but SCSN provides a single standard for communication. It eliminates the need for custom solutions and makes it easier to serve multiple customers simultaneously.” Rik adds that customers who place orders directly from their own ERP systems no longer need to manually re-enter data into a webshop: “That’s why EDI is such a valuable addition — it speeds up the process and lowers the barrier to entry.” Ralf agrees: “Where we used to rely on quotes and manual order entry, orders now come in with a single click. It’s faster, more reliable, and it strengthens the customer relationship.”

Successful Adoption Starts with Collaboration
Many companies assume that connecting to SCSN is complex — but that’s not the case. “We always start with the items customers order most frequently,” says Rik. “That keeps things manageable and makes the transition to digitalization easier.”
Sharing the GLN number and aligning a portion of the master data is often enough to get started. Ralf adds: “Once that’s in place, the systems can communicate quickly — and you’ll see how simple the process really is.”

Choosing the right service provider is also key. ArcelorMittal works closely with theirs: “We meet monthly, discuss challenges, and explore how we can support other customers,” says Ralf. “With the right support, it’s often plug-and-play.”

Opportunities for Software and ERP Vendors within SCSN
Software and ERP providers also play a crucial role. “There’s a real opportunity to support customers in their growing need for digital transformation,” says Rik.
Ideally, he’d like to see SCSN integration offered as a standard feature in software and ERP packages. “At the moment, customers are still figuring things out. They have to choose between connecting via a service provider or working with their software or ERP vendor. If the vendor offers a built-in SCSN connection, it saves customers a lot of hassle.” Ralf emphasizes: “As a vendor, make sure you respond to this demand. It’s already there — and it’s growing as the network expands. If you can help your customers connect to SCSN, it benefits your own business too. Make the integration as simple as possible.”

Looking Ahead: A Growing Network and New Opportunities
ArcelorMittal’s experience shows that digitalization isn’t just about technology — it’s about collaboration. Between customers and suppliers, between companies, and with supporting partners. By starting small, automating smartly, and actively supporting one another, SCSN becomes a true accelerator across the supply chain.

Ralf expects SCSN to continue growing rapidly — even beyond the steel industry: “There’s huge potential. The network can help other sectors improve digital communication too. It makes processes faster and more reliable.”
